Eritrea (IPA: /ˌɛrɨˈtreɪə, ˌɛrɨˈtriːə/) (Ge'ez: ኤርትራ ʾĒrtrā) is a country situated in northern East Africa. It is bordered by Sudan in the west, Ethiopia in the south, and Djibouti in the southeast. The east and northeast of the country have an extensive coastline on the Red Sea, directly across from Saudi Arabia and Yemen. The Dahlak Archipelago and several of the Hanish Islands are part of Eritrea. Eritrea was consolidated into a colony by the Italian government on January 1, 1890. Upon Italy's losses in World War II, Eritrea was ruled as a British protectorate between 1941 and 1952. Following a UN plebiscite in 1950, a resolution 390 (V) was adopted to have Eritrea enter into a federation with Ethiopia in 1952. Emperor Haile Selassie I, nevertheless annexed Eritrea as Ethiopia's 14th province in 1961 sparking the 30-year war that lasted from 1961 to 1991. Following a UN supervised referendum called UNOVER Eritrea declared- and gained international recognition for its independence in 1993. Eritrea's constitution, adopted in 1997, stipulates that the state is a presidential republic with a unicameral parliamentary democracy. The constitution, however, has not yet been implemented fully due to, according to the government, the prevailing border conflict with Ethiopia which began in May 1998. Eritrea is a multilingual and multicultural country with two dominant religions (Oriental Orthodox Christianity and Sunni Islam) and nine ethnic groups. The country has no official language, but it has three working languages: Tigrinya, Arabic and English. Amharic and Italian are also widely spoken amongst the older generations.

The name Eritrea is a rendition of the ancient Greek name Ερυθραία, Erythraía, the Red Land. eritrea is one of the oldest states . it came to existance when God first created the earth ! even the bible talks about eritrea and ethiopia as d/f states. it was an indipendent state and it was never part of ethiopia until the The British expelled the Italians in 1941 and continued to administer the territory and in 1951 they handed Eritrea to Ethiopia . the ethiopians conquered eritrea and made it it's 14th provoince but the eritreans rebeled and fought against the ethiopians for 31 straight years and finally in may 24 1991 the gained their freedom . ethiopia and eritrea have alot of things in common . it's obviuos that they are from the same ancestors but they have always been known as d/f states

I believe it started in the 60's (it took 30 years to gain independence) when the Eritreans fought for independence. They finally achieved that in 1991. Then between 1998-2000 a border war was faught.... Even now, Ethiopia and Eritrea are not at peace. Its all over the internet that another war might start (AGAIN). So, I woouldn't say that it's finished yet. My family immigrated from Ethiopia and it's sad to see what's happening between us. If another war starts, it's just going to make matters worse. These two countries have so much potential but they're not using it. We have so much in common (cuturally) and I don't understand why we hate eachother sooo much; we're basically the same people (besides the different ethnic groups). I just hope and pray that one day we will be at peace and Ethiopia and Eritrea will be BEEEEESSSSSTTT FRIIIIIEEEENDDDS!!! The border demarcation was not a victory for either side because it will not bring a lasting peace. The Afar people who are Ethiopians and the port of Assab, which belongs to Ethiopia, will remain a source of conflict. We are all tired of war and poverty but nor will we live in peace when Ethiopia's territorial integrity is violated. It is sad to know the death of all those soldiers on both sides will have resolved nothing in the end. When Meles is replaced, (he will be replaced) and a government that is willing to stand for the interests of Ethiopia is in power, this issue will come up again. Peace would have been achieved by returning the Afar people as they desire and Assab to Ethiopia, their rightful place. The Hague conference was a fraud and is clearly indicated by their mumbo jumbo decision they gave. Peace cannot be achieved by deception or theft. It is distressing to know that there is another war looming over both nations.
